COVID-19 and Flu Vaccines in Pregnancy
In Pregnancy you naturally question and double check every move you make so it is understandable to have questions or concerns over vaccination in Pregnancy. This time of year, the Flu Vaccine is widely recommended in Pregnancy and a COVID-19 Booster is now also being offered.
Why are the COVID-19 and Flu Vaccines recommended in Pregnancy?
Here are some key facts you need to know...
Flu Vaccine:
Is designed to protect both you and baby.
Pregnant women are more likely to develop complications and become more unwell if they do get the flu.
Flu in pregnancy increases the chance of preterm birth, low birthweight and stillbirth in babies.
The flu vaccine does not contain any live virus so cannot cause the flu.
COVID-19 Vaccine:
COVID-19 vaccine and booster will protect you and your baby, as you make antibodies in response to the vaccine which also give your baby protection against COVID-19
Pregnant women are more likely to have more severe symptoms of COVID-19 than the non-pregnant population.
Evidence shows women who have needed hospital care or ICU admission in pregnancy with COVID-19 have mostly not been vaccinated.
COVID-19 may cause risk to baby such as preterm birth.
Are the COVID-19 and Flu Vaccines safe during Pregnancy?
Yes, they are both safe at any stage of Pregnancy and during Breastfeeding too.
What else can I do to protect my baby during Pregnancy?
There are many other things you can do In Pregnancy as well as vaccinations to keep you and your baby healthy.
One of these things is to ensure you are consuming all the essential vitamins and minerals for pregnancy and taking supplements where necessary. Folic Acid, Zinc, Vitamin D, Iodine and Vitamin K are really important whilst you grow your baby.
Simple changes in your diet and an awareness of how to get sufficient levels of these vital micronutrients will really help keep your health on track. I recommend having a read of Aptaclub’s expert nutrition information here: www.aptaclub.co.uk/midwifepip to learn more.
